Impulse project 5 in the LaNDER³ joint project is dedicated to researching economic process chains for the sustainable production of natural fiber plastic composites.

Natural fiber-plastic composites are becoming increasingly attractive. They have a high potential for the energy- and resource-efficient production of sustainable and competitive components. Despite many advantages, natural fibre composites have so far only been found in selected applications, such as automotive engineering or the sports equipment industry. Among the major causes of this are still to be modified deficient properties of natural fibre composites compared to synthetically reinforced plastics.

Objective: Impulse project 5 aims to eliminate previous deficits of natural fibre composites compared to synthetically reinforced plastics and to expand applications from natural fibre composites on the one hand through improved component and surface properties and on the other hand through competitive, material-adapted manufacturing processes.

To implement the objectives in accordance with the strategy of the LaNDER³ project, the project is pursuing the following main research areas:

  • Research focus 1: Innovative manufacturing technologies and economic processes for lightweight natural fibre composites (Prof. S. Scholz).
  • Research focus 2: Environmentally compatible processes for the application of functional layers for complex loaded  components of natural fibre composites (Prof. J. Weber)
  • Research focus 3: Efficient mold temperature control and process heat utilization in the production of components of natural fibre composites (Prof. J. Meinert)
  • Research focus 4: Process networking and data management in processing of natural fibre composites (Prof. J. Lässig)
